Top Chef

It is so nice to be welcomed back from an exhausting yet productive trip away with lots of hugs and kisses. Not so nice to experience a night of multiple wake ups. When my mom told me that I wouldn't sleep for at least 18 years after having a child, she wasn't kidding! Oh well, this too shall pass.

I took Lauren to neighbor friend Faith's 5th birthday party yesterday at a fabulous place called Young Chef's Academy.

The 20-plus kids were each given their own aprons and chef hats, and assumed their places at tall steel cooking tables. Lauren did not know anybody except the birthday girl so at first, was hesitant about the whole experience.

As soon as we finagled the seating assignments so she was perched right next to Faith, however, she perked right up.

I thought there was no way to keep that many youngsters entertained with cooking for over 2 hours, but boy, was I wrong! The instructor chefs were genuinely funny and entertaining, and the kids quickly became involved.

Who would think this much hilarity could ensue from a cooking class?

Of course, it quickly became apparent that much of our girl's enjoyment was the result of a mini-crush developed on the only male chef in the room. Can you say pure adoration?

The instructors really gave the kids quite a bit of responsibility. Besides kneading their own bread for soft breadsticks, they cut tomatoes and cheese for pasta salad.

Frosted their own massive cupcakes.

And rolled their own candy sushi (aka, fruit rolls with rice krispie treat filling and a licorice stick).

Needless to say, I was quite alarmed at the amount of sugar to be consumed by the young'uns, but thankfully, Lauren did not want anything to do with the candy sushi, and only licked the frosting off of her cupcake.

Still, the combination of artificial ingredients and late afternoon fatigue resulted in the requisite amount of silliness for all involved.

Our little chef had a great time and, as we speak, is already putting her new knife-wielding skills to the test as she carves a pumpkin with Daddy. Off to see what they've come up with; stay tuned ................................
