Mermaid Points

Norm developed a pool game with Lauren several years ago to encourage her swimming prowess. For every skill identified by him that she masters, she earns what he has dubbed "Mermaid Points." She can earn points for everything from touching the pool bottom, to swimming unassisted from the steps to the opposite wall. You get the picture.

Tonight I returned from work to 90 degree weather outside. Lauren ran in a few minutes later, cheeks flushed from several hours of nonstop running around at Little Gym camp. After Shabbat with my mom and a dinner of yummy rotisserie chicken from Zankou Chicken (with an insane garlic sauce), she begged to jump in the pool, fully expecting me to decline, I'm sure, given the relatively late hour and proximity to bath and bedtime.

But Mama surprised her girl and said, "Sure!" After all, it was Friday leading into a holiday weekend, one that will be filled with friends, crafts, and tons of snuggles. So off came her clothes and in she went, completely au naturel (one of the benefits of having lush landscaping - total privacy). Bedecked in only her cap and goggles, she spent over an hour diving, splashing, singing, and earning lots and lots of Mermaid Points.

Holiday Weekend, we are so ready for you. The awarding of more Mermaid Points are just around the corner, I'm sure.
