Energizer Weekend

This past weekend was chock full of activity, even for us. Saturday was spent at dance class (while Norm got his surf on), followed by shopping and going out to lunch as a family, then back to the house to plant wildflowers and indulge in a home cooked meal.

Sunday, however, was reserved for not one, but two parties. You read that right. A 4-year-old with a 6 a.m. wakeup, no nap, and a late bedtime after going to Los Angeles? Yes, we're gluttons for punishment. Thankfully, the meltdown never occurred and we all got to enjoy the day from dawn till dark.

Lauren woke up as bubbly as ever, and believe it or not, maintained the same level of hyperkinetic energy for 14 hours straight.

She started off the morning with a dance performance on her "stage", punctuated by her sock puppets:

Then it was off to a kid's birthday party at a local My Gym, where she played games and tumbled her heart out.

In the afternoon, we headed to the Grove in Los Angeles for a law school graduation party for Camille, a sweet and special friend of our family whom Lauren absolutely adores. We arrived a little early, so took the opportunity to introduce Lauren to the American Girl store. Wow. With 3 floors of dolls and clothes (that cost more than adult wardrobes, thank you very much), we were thankful that Lauren got more enjoyment out of riding up and down the escalator than pining after the store's contents.

Just outside the store's entrance, Lauren spotted a gold star mosaic on the ground and, of course, immediately ran to the center of it and broke into an impromptu dance, oblivious to the onlookers, but quickly enveloping everyone in her apparent joy of just . . . . . being.

Then on to Maggiano's restaurant, where she couldn't wait to celebrate with Camille and with a knowing glint in her eye, conspiratorily told her: "You're gonna be a lawyer just like Mommy!"

Of course Lauren quickly became fast friends with the only other girl present at the very grown up cocktail party.

Alas, despite her overtired protests, we carried her to the car, put on her jammies, covered her with Cinderella blankie, and drove the hour home with nothing but whispery breathing coming from the back seat.
