Colored Eggs and Rainbow Challah

While we don't celebrate Easter, we do indulge in coloring eggs this time of year. Why, you ask? Because, as parents to a crafty and adventurous 5-year-old, it's just plain fun. And, well, when that little girl's eyes lit up and got as big as saucers when she saw the egg decorating kit as we raced through the grocery store a couple of weeks ago after swim lesson, this mama just couldn't say no.

So last Thursday we hurried through bath time and dressed in her finest satin nightgown, engaged in some serious egg dyeing.

She was uber impatient to get started, as if this expression doesn't say it all.

But she quickly got into the spirit.

After dunking the eggs, she checked the color and promptly decided they were nowhere near "done."

So we waited.

And waited some more.

Until they were just the perfect shade of pastel-ly goodness, and ready for embellishment with, what else? Disney Princess stickers, of course.

The very next afternoont, I stopped at the local bakery to pick up our standing weekly challah order. After arriving home, I pulled the challah out of the bag, expecting to see the usual golden brown crust studded with raisins.

Instead, this is what I got.

My first reaction was, um, Easter Challah?? It just seemed wrong on so many levels. My next thought was, how will I explain this to Lauren? Fortunately, she saw it and said "How cool! Rainbow Challah!"

And you know what? As odd as it looked, that Rainbow Challah tasted incredibly good, especially as part of our weekend french toast.

Hope everyone's weekend was also filled with a kaleidoscope of colors.
