For the past year or so, Lauren has been adamant about what she wants to be "when she grows up." A doctor. Not just any doctor. She specifically wants to be a doctor "that takes care of grownups." Pretty ironic, because for the longest time when I was a kid, I said I wanted to be an internal medicine physician, which is exactly the same thing. And no, I didn't put the thought into her head; she came up with it 100% on her own. She will announce her decision to anyone who will listen. She even tried to one-up her pediatrician this afternoon. While in the doctor's office to have her chest checked for a lingering cough she's had (lungs were clear), the doctor was listening to her with a stethoscope. Lauren announced "I have 3." The doctor said, "Three what?" To which Lauren replied "3 stethoscopes!" (stated with almost a sense of exasperation in her voice, as if to say "Come on, get with the program").
After dinner tonight, when Norm got home, I was telling him how Lauren was educating her pediatrician about her desire to also become a doctor. Lauren then jumped into the conversation to clarify her chosen career path: "First I'm going to be a doctor. Then, I think I'll be a mermaid." Dual careers, you say? Go for it, Sweetie. You can do anything you put your mind to.

I loved this story! A doctor, then a mermaid? Is this an option? Darn it. And I chose teaching.
Darn.
I know, I may nudge her towards accomplishing the mermaid certification first. :)
I completely understand her decision. Think about it. She needs to be a doctor to afford all the diamonds that she is so into. But a mermaid is SO much more fashionable and in tune with her new love of swimming.
Makes perfect sense if you ask me.
