New Years' Post-Script

I need to take us back to 2011 for a few moments in order to document our rockin' New Years' Eve.

The Big Top Cupcake we made to ring in the New Year was tres magnifique, if I do say so myself. Of course, 100% of the decorating was done either by or at Lauren's direction.

[The 3 candles on top represented her, me and Daddy. The sweetness of this child truly knows no bounds.]

Beyond the cream cheese frosting, sprinkles and strategically placed Hershey's kisses, Lauren added one additional surprise to the back of the cake.

[Ariel and her 2 sisters just had to take a swim in the chocolate pool, she explained. Of course they did.]

Shortly before 9 p.m. our time, we turned on the TV to catch the festivities being broadcast in New York City.

[So thankful I decided not to let her get the noisemaking blowers. How any one human has this much energy for 15 hours straight is beyond me.]

At the top of the hour, we clinked plastic champagne flutes (Lauren's filled with grape juice, ours with some type of sparkling wine that was 10x sweeter than any juice I've ever had), mouthed unknown words to Auld Lang Syne, and belted out "New York, New York."

By 9:30 p.m., Lauren was out cold in my bed (a more frequent occurrence lately. The old me would have insisted she sleep in her own bed at all costs, but the new me is more relaxed about it. She won't be 5 forever, after all). I made it almost until 11:00 p.m. before slipping under sheets that had already warmed by her little furnace of a body.

So while our version of New Years' Eve this year may seem tame and boring, for us it worked. And I wouldn't change a thing. Nope. Everything is as it should be.
