Well, for the past 6 months she's still been going to the ice rink, only now it's with my mom, every Tuesday after school (we've also just added Friday afternoons) with her own skates and sparkly skating outfit, to take lessons.
So I guess it's official. Our girl is not only a ballerina and dancer, but is now a figure skater.
She participated in her first competition last month. It was more of a casual thing for student skaters at her ice rink, just to introduce them to the concept of competing. Included in her entry fee was a new skating leotard. Blue to match her eyes, of course.

Not having seen Lauren skate much previously, I really didn't know what to expect. There were 8 skaters at her level, and she was surprisingly nervous during warmups and before she stepped onto the ice.
Once she began her 45-second program, however, her focus and quiet confidence returned.

Yes, I'm a proud mama, but I must say, she was magnificent.

When it came time for the awards ceremony, Lauren set everyone's expectations low, claiming that she really wanted a bronze medal because she liked the color.
Getting ready to go onto the ice for the ceremony, she was excited.

However, waiting for the winners to be announced was cold and not so much fun.

When they announced the third and second place winners, and it wasn't Lauren, I was prepared to console her - after all, this was her very first time competing and many of the other girls had been skating since they were much younger.
Catching the moment when they announced "Lauren Katz" as the first-place winner?
Priceless.

[Uncle Brian was in town for the performance]
Just as priceless, however?
Seeing my family's reaction:

*****************************************************************************
Fast forward a couple of weeks, and we were all back at the same ice rink, this time for Lauren's 8th birthday party.

13 friends joined her on the ice, and while there were a fair share of bumps and bruises for those brave souls not as experienced on skates, overall everyone had a great time, especially our birthday girl, who was totally and completely in her element.

Lauren's second ice skating competition (and first "real" one) is this coming weekend. She selected the song she will skate to ("You Can Count on Me" by Bruno Mars) and has only been working on her routine for a few weeks. She's nervous again, but you had better believe she will have the loudest cheering section in the place. Because that's how we roll.
